The Soft Side of Mother's Day Flowers

I don't know why but I have never used traditional holiday's in my work to help add atmosphere, life, or feel to the story. With Mother's Day swooping in fast and furious I am suddenly realizing what a mistake that is. There are so many great, romantic holiday's that would work to add to the stories, even if it's just a little mention of some guy who seemed perfectly callous sending Mother's Day flowers to his mom and getting caught dialing 1800flowers by a surprised woman who had given up on him as un-salvageable.

Of course, there are more obvious gift giving holidays that she could catch him in the act with, but too obvious doesn't work well. Mother's Day flowers not only shows he has a soft side but there is something very special about remembering mom.
Then again, a smart man would come bearing roses to really melt the heroine's heart.
